Look for foam that has a density no less than 1.2 pound per cubic foot. With foam, higher density usually equals a long lasting mattress that retains it feel. Natural fibers, mostly cotton, are good for futons that need more flexibility. For those of us that are traditionalists a natural fiber and foam blend is a good choice when looking at a futon mattress. The futon cover is the piece that buttons up the look of the futon.
A lighter futon bed mattress is a good choice as long as it gives the comfort you want. If youre planning on using your futon mainly as a bed then a heavier futon mattress is usually going to be best option. Firmness is a measurement of the feel or give of the mattress when used as a sleeping or sitting surface. This quality is what people define as comfortable. Rigidity is the ability of the futon bed mattress to retain its shape along its edge when being used as a bed or sofa.
Rigidity of a futon bed mattress is more important when the futon is being used mainly as a sofa. Flexibility basically defines how easy folding the futon mattress is going to be. If you are going to folding the mattress daily from sofa to bed back to sofa again, then buying a futon bed mattress with a lot of flexibility makes sense. Futon bed mattresses are made from a variety of materials.
There are a few things that you need to consider if you are looking for a futon. What is my frame made of? How long will my frame last? Always look for a futon frame that is made from solid hardwoods, avoid any frames that are made from particle board or MDF. Measure width and the distance between the slats on the back and seat decks. Slats should be at least two and a half inches wide and if the spacing is more than three inches, forget it.
The other issue with the hollow bars is that if enough weight was placed on a spot they would begin to bend. The issue became so bad that a 90 day warranty was put in place by most manufacturers of these frames. Another issue the black metal frames suffered from were bending stretcher bars or rails. Again the hollow nature of these strecther rails presented issues with breakage and bending.
