Ormazd. Ottoman. September 26th , 2017.
Ottomans were very popular in the Ottoman Empire and this is where it gets its name from. Normally ottomans are sold as part of a set and are paired with an armchair or glider. They are designed to match the chair or glider that they are paired with. In most homes they can be found in the living room and are used solely to put up ones feet. Designers are now coming up with innovative ways to use this piece of furniture and there are number of different uses that ottomans can be used for.
Using ottomans in home décor is not new, and according to the Encyclopaedia* Britannica (not Wikipedia) the ottoman has been with us since the late 18th century when it was introduced to Europe from Turkey (the Ottoman Empire). Its origins are irrelevant to its current use, which is as a footstool or a seat. Some ottomans consist of a small padded seat standing on four legs, while others are in the form of a padded box with a hinged lid the storage ottoman.
Just as a coffee table is likely to serve as a footstool at some point, the ottoman invariably serves as a makeshift coffee table, too. As a resting place for legs and feet, an ottoman needs to be easy to clean and durable. For its durability and functionality, ottoman leather has almost become synonymous with ottoman furniture. Leather bears up well under heavy use, and its patina only improves with age. Ottoman leather suits both contemporary and traditionally decorated rooms, too, adding texture, rich color and style.
Ottomans are decorative furniture pieces that are used for seating, lying down, storage and giving a gorgeous look to your living room. Ottomans are common in countries like the United States and European countries, but they are seldom found in the third world countries. Quite interestingly, the term is derived from the French word ottomane, which is the feminine version of ottoman. The word could have also been derived from the Italian Ottomano, Medieval Latin Ottomanus, Medieval Greek Othomanoia, from Arabic Utmani. Ottoman was also the name of an empire of the late 16th century.
To be functional, an ottomans height should precisely match the height of the sofa or chair that you will occupy while using it. Ottomans should be chosen in consideration of those who will most use them. For some, a light ottoman will provide all the support needed. For others, a larger, wider piece is a better choice. A broad selection of ottomans ensures that there is a piece to suit any taste and any decor. For warm and cozy rooms, consider ottomans with bases, constructed in rich colors and textured fabrics.
